The Guild has always aimed to build a lively community that enhances student life by holding events and important sessions throughout the year. The most recent event was last Friday’s Toga Party.

Toga, as a lot of people might already know, is a long-standing event hosted by the Guild as a way to introduce first-years to the student culture at uni. This event saw a huge amount of people committing to the theme and donning Togas, and those who didn’t at least wore white to blend in with the mob.

Organised and hosted by the Guild on March 1, the party ran from 6:00 pm – 12:00 am at the Curtin Tav and 106 Courtyard. The aim of the Toga Party was to welcome all Curtin students, both old and new, to  let loose after getting past Week 1.

The Guild’s Vice President, Max Zhang, mentioned that this year, the Guild specifically focused on what went wrong last year and made the appropriate changes to make the party a success by increasing the area, staff and licensing of the bar.

“The last Toga was a little cramped as we did not have the courtyards outside despite having a smaller capacity.

“There used to be a twenty-minute long line just for a drink, which was not an issue this year because of the adequate bar staff numbers and the second bar out in the Guild Courtyard.

“This time, we have extended out to both courtyards as well as to the Tav and the beer garden. So, people have a bit of freedom of movement, which is a big improvement from last year,” he said.

Despite reaching a maximum capacity of 1500, the white decorations around the courtyard and the pillars and columns of staple Rome with vines wrapped all over the place reflected the spirit of Ancient Rome.

With the welcome addition of activities like gaming stations, a photo booth, and Electronic Music Appreciation Society (EMAS) DJs playing late 2000’s songs for the widely popular silent disco, there was something for everyone.

The event’s main attraction featured incredible musical performances by Michael Day, HANN, SHAZI, and Harry Sun in the Guild Courtyard to keep the Togans engaged throughout.

The Guild’s Vice President of Activities, Max Zhang, was proud the event reached capacity before 10 pm.

I think we hit capacity almost three hours in, which is quite a good record. That’s the earliest we have hit capacity, especially for a 1500-person event,” he said.

According to Max, the new additions to the event turned out to be the right move and offered something different for everyone.

“It was a great decision to add silent disco to the list, and I could see a huge line standing out,” he said.

There were also quiet spaces and activities for those who wanted to socialise but wanted a break from the tunes.

From activities like Giant Jenga and the video games set up inside the Tav, courtesy of the Esports club. Three consoles were set up and offered fighting, sport, and rhythm games, which saw a high rate of turnover as everyone got a turn. Fifa, Injustice 2 and Just Dance drew the largest crowds.

With a massive improvement from the Toga party last year, this Toga was a guide to how hard work and learning from setbacks can lead to success.
