Prove your humanity

Attention all Netflix subscribers! If you are looking for something to watch, press play on the Netflix Original film, Okja.

Directed by Bong Joon Ho and released in June, this modern sci-fi adventure film is a tale of friendship and love between young South Korean girl Mija (An Seo Hyun) and a fascinating, fictitious super pig named Okja.

Okja takes its audience on an emotional and gripping ride. The story begins in South Korea where Mija has been the caretaker and companion to Okja for ten years. A powerful relationship connects the two and Mija is determined to risk everything to stop Lucy Mirando (Tilda Swinton), CEO of Mirando Corporation, from kidnapping Okja for scientific testing.

Along the way, Mija encounters the Animal Liberation Front (ALF), which features an ensemble of Hollywood stars including Paul Dano, Lily Collins, Steven Yuen and Jake Gyllenhaal.  The ALF support Mija, accompanying her as she makes her way to New York City to save Okja.

Okja is a truly moving film that takes the audience on a touching journey while incorporating important issues such as animal cruelty. The film unapologetically portrays the brutal truth of factory farming—which is still a reality in some parts of the world.

Eyes glued to the screen, you migh find yourself in tears because of Bong Joon Ho’s suspenseful screenplay.

What is Okja’s fate? Will she be reunited with Mija, and if so, make it home to the mountains?

Each actor embodies their character extremely well with candid emotions that will pull at your heartstrings. Mija, full of passion and independence, puts friendship first as she risks her life to get her best friend back.

At 120 minutes long, there is never a dull moment as Mija embarks on a rescue mission across the world. The audience who attended the film’s premiere at the Cannes Film Festival seemed to agree, as the film was received warmly by a four-minute-long standing ovation.

Okja is brought to life by amazing animation and digital effects. This captures the audience and releases them into this believable, dark realm of a modern era, where genetically modified creatures are taken to the next level.

Feeling inspired?

Okja is a must see for those who wish to have their mind provoked, heart widened and soul touched.

This tale of melancholy enchantment will leave a lasting impression long after the credits have rolled. So sit back, the adventure awaits you.
