Beat of the Week: Paige Valentine’s ‘Pure’

It’s the start of a new era for local singer-songwriter Paige Valentine with the release of her first 2020 single, Pure.

Launched into the world a few weeks ago, it’s a song that shines a bit of light onto a strange time in the world, putting Valentine’s nuanced songwriting and dreamy vocals on display.

With ambient synths and subtle stretched-out guitar notes, the song feels pensive and certainly has emotional weight to it, presented in an atmospheric mix that can only be described as beautifully capacious.

Accompanying Pure is a nostalgic video directed by Fremantle filmmaker Luna Laure. Speaking about working on the music video, Valentine says it was a once in a lifetime opportunity.

“When Laure came over for the first time, I ended up giving her a bunch of plants from my garden I’d grown from seed without realising she’d built the plot around me growing a plant representing love / relationships.

I now have a permanent hole in the lino from the fire that resulted in my manager hiding under the kitchen table with a bucket of water, but the clip was so worth it and we all had so much fun in the two days of the shoot, ending with a late night of red wine, pizza and lots of post-covid hugs. Truly honoured to work with such incredible and fun creatives.”

As restrictions ease in WA, Valentine is one of many local artists who’ve been gigging once again, with a round of dates in June and early July. And if listeners like what they hear, they’ll be stoked to know the singer-songwriter has a busy year ahead working on her upcoming EP.
