Straight from your GROK music team comes a list of some of their favourite afrobeat records. Featuring songs from Davido, WizKid, Burna Boy, Mayorkun and more, this playlist is a smorgasbord of Afrobeat sounds.

‘THE BEST’ – DAVIDO feat. MAYORKUN

For his third studio album, Davido teams up with his fellow DMW members and frequent collaborators, Mayorkun and FreshVDM. The Best is the fourth single off The Better Time album, a dynamic project that proves the singer-songwriter is one of Afrobeat’s greatest artists. The video is reminiscent of The Karate Kid as we see Davido being The Best teaching his student – Mayorkun – how to also be The Best.

 

 

‘KILOFESHE’ – ZINOLEESKY

The Marlian music star, Zinoleesky has thrilled fans again with the release of his latest song, Kilofeshe. Following up on his hit single Ma Pariwo, both tracks were taken off his Debut EP Chrome Eccentric. The track features amazing production heavily influenced by the South African Amapiano.

 

‘IJA’ – AYRA STARR

The latest new cool kid on the block, Ayra Starr is signed to Nigerian label, Mavins Records. Her debut EP Ayra Starr has been topping music charts as critics peg the teen singer as the next big female superstar coming out of Nigeria. 

 

 

‘CAN’T RELATE’ – OMAH LAY 

A breakthrough Nigerian artist in 2020, Omah Lay releases the catchy track Can’t Relate from his latest sophomore EP, What Have We Done. Featured on Apple Music’s playlist ‘Africa Rising Artist’ and AudioMack’s ‘Up Now Featured Artist’, his new sound is paving a bright future for Lay.

 

 

‘YOUR BODY’ – MAYORKUN 

The “Mayor of Lagos” is cooking up amazing tunes for his citizens with his sophomore album. His last few songs have been known to get everyone up off their feet and onto the dancefloor, and Your Body is no different. Mayorkun knows exactly what music lovers want, and he makes sure he uses his recipes to make the best of dishes for them.

 

 

‘KPK (KO POR KE)’ – REXXIE & MOHBAD

KPK (Ko Por Ke) is a collaboration between one of Nigeria’s finest record producers, Rexxie and the fast-rising Marlian artist, Mohbad. The producer serves up an Amapiano record blessed with Mohbad vocals, cementing it as a fan favourite since its release in 2020.

 

 

‘BAAJO’ – KWESI ARTHUR & JOEBOY

The Ghanian heavyweight rapper and Groundup Chale super front liner, Kwesir Arthur teams up with the Nigerian sensational singer, Joeboy to deliver another top-charting cross-country song titled Baajo. This song is proof that when Nigerians and Ghanaians make music together, greatness is the result.

 

 

‘HIGH WAY’ – DJ KAYWISE & PHYNO

After his previous hit, What Type of Dance, the Nigerian disc jockey DJ Kaywise drops High Way. Teaming up with South-Eastern Nigerian artist Phyno, the track features Phyno singing and rapping in his indigenous language. Offering yet another track to get everyone dancing and feeling good in 2021.

 

 

‘INFINITY’ – OLAMIDE feat. OMAH LAY

The Southwest Nigerian rap god, Olamide teams up with the fast-rising star, Omah Lay for perhaps one of the biggest songs from both artists in Infinity. The elements of the production are a sincere indication that both artists can jump on any track, with any collaborator, and make it a success.

 

 

‘GINGER’ – WIZKID feat. BURNA BOY

Ginger is a creation from arguably two of the biggest artists in Nigeria. Before the release of his latest album, fans of Star Boy and African Giant made it a top priority to make the song one of the most anticipated singles in Sub-Saharan Africa. This hype was rewarded with a sensational track that is likely to be left on repeat. 

 

 

‘HAVE FUN’ – BAD BOY TIMZ

After huge success in 2020 with his single Mj, the newcomer has released yet another top-charting song that is addictive and gets you chanting the words to ‘Have Fun’. With this track, 2021 promises to be a bigger and better year for the artist.

 

 

‘FELONY’ – CKAY

The sweet lover boy has mastered the art of capturing the hearts of audiences with his melodious vocals. Felony is the lead single from Ckay’s upcoming EP, Boyfriend, a project that was inspired by a special someone the singer-songwriter was facetiming with quite a bit during the COVID-19 lockdowns.

 

 

‘DAMAGES’ – TEMS

In the lead single off her debut EP, For Broken Ears, the Nigerian singer, Tems explores newfound freedom from a love affair. Damages explores Tems reflections on love, life, and relationships, weaving subtle melodies with airy R&B production in a cool yet refined afrobeat track.

 

‘WAY TOO BIG’ – BURNA BOY 

Way Too Big is the hit single off Burna Boy’s latest studio album, Twice as Tall. The track tells a story of the superstar’s life gathering real events and elements that ground him as an artist. The video portrays him as an artist, a businessman, a fighter, and most importantly, a hardworking man that has earned every success.

 

 

‘SOUTHY LOVE’ – PERUZZI feat. FIREBOY DML

An unexpected collaboration that came at the right time, Southy Love by Peruzzi featuring Fireboy DML is a song that makes you want to pack your things, catch a flight, and travel just to meet the person of your dreams. The track is heartfelt and authentic, with both artists singing their hearts out on how distance is making them want more love.
