‘We All Need To Pee’ campaign: Update.

In October 2020 the Curtin Student Guild’s Queer Department launched the transgender-positive campaign, ‘We All Need To Pee.’

The Guild placed stickers with the slogan ‘We All Need To Pee’ in bathrooms across the Bentley campus in hopes to raise awareness of the ‘lack of safety of transgender people in gendered bathrooms,’ and change the mindset of those who made transgender people feel uncomfortable.

However, within two weeks of the campaign’s launch, twenty-five per cent of the 500 stickers were defaced.

According to the Student Guild, stickers were ‘scratched out,’ ‘stripped from the wall’ and ‘written on.’

Bathrooms with defaced stickers included the women’s bathroom on level five in B105, the women’s staff toilet on level two B209, the men’s bathroom on level two B407, and the accessibility bathroom in B2000A.

In response, the Queer Department said they would alter the campaign to ensure ‘We All Need To Pee’ continued to run without further damage to Curtin property.

Since then the Queer Department have been working tirelessly to ensure the transgender community feel safe around campus.

Guild’s current Queer Officer Imari Morris says they are currently working to ensure all queer students are heard ‘when coming forward with issues.’

“You are so awesome! Regardless of where you are in your transition, at the very beginning or further along, whether you are out or not, you are amazing and you are loved,” the Guild’s Queer Department wrote in an Instagram post.

“There is still a long way to go before we are truly safe, but together we can face anything and fight for each other and our rights to exist.”
