Iced, Frothed, Flat, Bitter or Sweet

In two weeks, Curtin University and the Guild will welcome a new class of buzzing, excited, and nervous students.

Welcomed with open arms, students from across the board will be introduced to university life through O-Week activities, uni tours, and club recruitment.

As a third-year student, I feel it is my duty to let the freshmen in on the best coffee and eats on campus.

Finding what works for you in terms of food and coffee often has a lot to do with where your classes are held. As someone who primarily resides on the south end of campus, I often find myself seeking out the food trucks, hanging around the Basement or grabbing a coffee from the cafe next to 401.

Us students, we love a discount, and the first step you should take is to activate your guild membership. This is free for all students and gives you a 10% discount at all guild cafes, the Tav, and G Mart.

Some great spots on campus include:

  • Concept Coffee and Co. (my personal favourite).
  • Guild Cafe Library.
  • The Tav (for pub lovers).

With your guild discount, you can also get 20% off at Yo-Chi stores in Perth between March 2024 and May 2024 by presenting your student ID.

Guild Councillor and International Relations/Economics student Callum Baxter said, “Sinamon has great sweet treats, but Concept definitely has my heart for my vanilla oat milk latte.”

The Common Ground is a great option for a social study with coffee and some yummy sandwiches. They do a delicious pulled pork roti.

For students in education, journalism, screen arts, or most of the humanities subjects, you might find yourself stuck down the south end of campus. Although there aren’t as many restaurants here, there are some incredible food trucks that come to the creative quarter.

Psychology/Human Resources student Eloise Maddin spends her time hanging around the north end of campus.

“I love the Bahn Mi place up from the IGA; the bao are to die for! Otherwise, even just a good rice paper roll from the IGA is good,” she said.

Orientation can be a daunting experience for new students, but I hope you will find those of us who have been on campus for a couple of years are more than happy to offer a helping hand and some useful advice.

I live off coffee during my uni semesters, and knowing the good places to go has saved me from the pure disappointment that a bad coffee brings.
