Harmony Week is upon us! It’s that time of the year when Australians come together to celebrate our multiculturalism and the successful integration of migrants in our society. This year marks the 20th anniversary of this joyous occasion, and so to celebrate we’ve made a list of Perth’s most authentic ethnic restaurants! Here are some restaurants from Perth’s top 4 largest ethnic groups (besides British): Italian, German, Irish and Chinese.

1. Dough Pizza, Northbridge

Known for their selection of over 23 traditional Napoletana wood-fire pizzas, this tucked away pizzeria may be the closest you’ll find to the real thing. Cosy and plastered with bright 60s and 70s Italian posters, this is the ideal spot for a nice intimate gathering of family, friends or partners. Apart from their pizzas, the Southern-Italy inspired joint is also known for their prosciutto, salads, margarita and calamari. Popular for their warm, friendly and prompt customer service, it’s hard to leave unsatisfied.

Said by many to have a homey feel perfect for a romantic dinner, this is the place to be on your next boujee date. Rated 4.4/5 by 163 people on Zomato, we’re betting that Juniper & Bay is not one that will disappoint. With their top-notch service and staff, it’s no wonder this restaurant has become a favourite to many. Be sure to impress by ordering their famous chaat, popcorn chicken, fish, lamb shank or barramundi, before ending the night with crème brulée… Yummmm!

3. Durty Nelly’s Irish Pub, Perth CBD

Opening in 1998, Durty Nelly’s Irish Pub is “as close as you’ll get to Ireland in Perth”. With the establishment having been built in Ireland, deconstructed and then transported to Shafto Lane in Perth CBD, it literally is so. Durty Nelly is not only a regular host of live music and sporting broadcasts, their walls are also lined with the framed jerseys of Western Swan Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA). The place oozes with Irish hospitality and pride. The ‘Traditional Fare’ section on their menu includes dishes such as Traditional Irish Stew, Beef & Guinness Pie and Bacon & Cabbage, as well as carrying standard pub fare. The Irish Stew I ordered arrived quickly and steaming, and I was not disappointed. The tender lamb, barley and potatoes reminded me immediately of the food I had grown up with from my Dad’ side of the family. The bar is well stocked, sporting Guinness, Kilkenny and Magners and a variety of Irish whiskies, among other drinks. Great craic to be had at Durty Nelly’s.

4. Uncle Billy’s, Northbridge

We’re keepin’ it real and giving you the best of the best. Open from 5pm to 4am on the daily, this is the spot to go to satisfy all your post-club cravings. Located Perth’s very own Chinatown, walking through Uncle Billy’s doors will make you feel like you’ve just landed in Hong Kong. The indoor hustle and bustle of their wait staff has made all Chinese-Australians feel right at home. Some customer favourites include their beef sate, chilli pepper squid, snow crab, honey chicken, porridge, seafood selections and prawn crackers. My recommendation? It wouldn’t be a night at Uncle Billy’s if you don’t leave with a tummy filled with rice and sizzling tofu.

Location: Shop 9, 66 Roe Street, Northbridge, Perth WA

Opening Hours

Everyday: 5pm – 4am

5. Canton Bay Chinese Restaurant, Cannington

Want a boujeer option? Canton Bay is the way. Trumping even some dim sum restaurants in Asia, this place will leave you wanting more. Come with a group of at least 4 to enjoy their vast selection of dim sum dishes without breaking the bank. Try as you may, but we all fail to resist the temptation of the aromas of stacked steamed dishes circling around waiting for a picking.  Loved by Chinese-Australians for their dumplings, salted egg yolk bun and irresistible durian mochi, come ready to taste foods outside of your comfort zone.
