Does the sight of blood and guts make you squeamish? Do stories of ghouls and ghosts keep you up at night? Does the sound of chainsaws, swinging axes and maniacal laughing make your stomach churn? If you answered yes to any of these, then this time of year can be enough to make you scream. But there’s no reason scaredy-cats should have to miss out on the Halloween fun! Here are the best non-horror Halloween movies to watch this spooky season.

  1. Coraline

Depending who you ask, Coraline could be considered a horror movie. But this dark fairy tale is grossly underrated when it comes to the best movies to watch during Halloween. Coraline is an expertly crafted stop-motion animation from production company Laika (of Kubo and the Two Strings fame). The film is immersive in a way that so many live-action horror films aren’t—you join Coraline on her journey to a fantastical world where nothing is as it seems, and the nightmares from your childhood come to life.

  1. Death Becomes Her

Death Becomes Her is one of the most iconic black comedies of all time. It has everything—a strong allegory for the pressure to remain young and beautiful forever at the expense of your mental and physical wellbeing, Bruce Willis as a campy doctor, Meryl Streep looking immaculate (as always) and Goldie Hawn being her charming comedic self. The movie has gained a strong cult following in recent years and it isn’t hard to see why. Give Death Becomes Her a go if you’re looking for some easy watching over a cheeseboard and wine this Halloween.

  1. The Craft

You’re lying if you say The Craft didn’t have you considering a career in witchcraft. The Craft remains the defining movie on teenage witches, and still has a spooky and creepy vibe without being your stereotypical blood-and-guts horror flick. The aesthetic is VERY 1990s so it’s great for a throwback movie night filled with kitsch. The Craft never takes itself too seriously, but still manages to include some important messages about discrimination, compassion, and the lengths some people will go to when they’re pushed too far.

  1. Practical Magic

There’s something strange about the Owens sisters. Practical Magic is the ultimate Halloween chick flick, filled with romance, spells and potions. The heart of Practical Magic lies in its two stars, Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock, who have such amazing chemistry together it’s hard to believe they aren’t related in real life. The movie has all of the heart and soul of a traditional chick flick, but with added spooky flair.

There’s no reason why horror-lovers should have all the fun during Halloween when great non-horror spooky movies like these ones are around. Queue up your Netflix list, dim the lights and get ready to have some ooky spooky fun this Halloween!
